A Song to Sing

​Denise’s love for music is fiercely rooted in rhythm and blues, jazz, and contemporary jazz. Her love of music began with her parents and siblings who were all lovers of music. Denise has always loved how music has the power to heal the soul regardless of the circumstance.

As a child, Denise was active in church choirs while growing up in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother was a lover of gospel music, and her father was a lover of jazz. Often growing up, gospel, jazz, r&b, and soul music were always played in her home. That love was enhanced and continued to grow with her four brothers who were very eclectic in their taste and love of music. Her siblings also played a significant role in her love for music which she loves and appreciates today. She learned from her siblings and developed a love for Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Al Jareau, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Earth, Wind and Fire, Teddy Pendergrass, and the Isley Brothers just to name a few.

As a child, all her siblings played musical instruments. She remembers vividly the saxophone and violin being played in her home and it was an integral part of her upbringing. She also played the flute as a child. As a result, soul, hip hop, and R&B became an important part of her musical taste. Although she loves all musical genres, she generally sings, jazz, gospel, rhythm, and blues.  The key to Denise’s appeal is her strong alto voice that tends to linger in your spirit. Her mission is to make you feel the meaning of the song and moreover, the importance of the lyrics. Denise draws inspiration from some of her musical icons like Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle, Jeane Carne, Ledisi and Jennifer Hudson to name a few.

 

As a younger adult, Denise became a member of her church choir at the Hillside Chapel of Truth and Faith in Atlanta, Georgia. She was highly active in the choir, and it became a strong presence in her musical journey. After moving to her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, she became a member of the choir at First Baptist Church. She would sing often for the church on many separate occasions in church and out of the church. Gospel music was instrumental in her love of music, especially during her earlier years. Denise gives fantastic performances, and she captivates her audiences with her sultry and strong alto voice. She has a beautiful voice that suits all kinds of genres of music, and this should place her at the top of your list for live local musical performances.
